My Journey: From Clinical Care to Policy Influencer

I’m Dr. Sanjay R. Kumawat, a practising Psychiatrist and Sexologist with over three decades of clinical experience, dedicated to helping people lead emotionally healthier and more fulfilling lives. I completed my medical education at Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai, and my journey since then has been grounded in clinical care and mental health advocacy.

What I've accomplished over the years

I began my career as a Lecturer in Psychiatry at L.T.M.M. College and Sion Hospital, Mumbai, before moving to the District Hospital at Jalgaon, where I had the rewarding experience of serving rural communities for three years

Later, at the Government Regional Mental Hospital, Thane, where I rose to the post of Medical Superintendent and then became State Head of Mental Health after moving to the Directorate of Health Services as Deputy Director.

Over the years, I’ve had the honour of serving in key positions that influenced mental health policies and practice across Maharashtra

I’m particularly proud of having started the first State Dementia Day Care Centre and a Schizophrenia Rehabilitation Centre at RMH, Thane, initiatives close to my heart that combined vision with practical care

Alongside this, I regularly organized CMEs and workshops for mental health professionals, bringing together some of the finest psychiatrists from Mumbai and Thane, conducting mental health camps across Thane and Raigad districts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I organized a series of online talks and lectures on mental well-being and coping strategies for doctors, healthcare workers, and the general public: a collective effort to stay resilient through unprecedented times.

At present, I serve on the Medico-Legal Cell of the Bombay Psychiatric Society and the Indian Psychiatric Society, West Zone.

Mental health is not just my profession; it is my purpose.
